A Midwife for Angela
Where medical care is not available, women too often die in childbirth. This story is about a young girl in rural Mexico whose older sister dies giving birth, along with her baby. To overcome her grief, she determines to become a midwife in order to prevent others in her
community from suffering such a terrible loss.
The story is bilingual, written in English and Spanish, to help young readers learn the other language. The beautiful illustrations by Alma Lucero Martínez Salazar, a student studying Communications and Graphic Design at the prestigious Instituto Tecnologico Sanmiguelense de Estudios Superiores in San Miguel, makes the story come to life and helps in understanding the words in another language. The story unfolds about the relationship of Juanita and her older sister, Angela. Angela gets married and shares that she has become pregnant. The whole family is excited about the impending birth, everyone contributing to the new little one to come.
Once labor starts, things get difficult and no resources are available
to help Angela. Finally, the doctor from the closest town is brought by
horse, but it is too late. Juanita's mother helps her crying daughter,
showing her a star in the sky that is now her sister, with the little
star nearby that is the baby. Juanita feels her sister's presence,
telling her to not let other women suffer like she has. Juanita works
very hard to become a midwife, her sister guiding her from her place in the stars.
